Building a stronger foundation in a caring community

The residents of the Temiskaming and area have long worked together to build a better place – a place where a sense of “community” prevails. They are people who are interested in helping each other in difficult and good times. They know that health and human service programs, arts and cultural activities, and educational and recreational opportunities are all vital to the well-being of our community.

Today, more and more people are placing their trust in their community foundation, The Temiskaming Foundation, to help them fulfill their philanthropic interests and give back to the community some of what they have accumulated throughout the years.

Broadly defined, community foundations are public charities consisting of trusts and funds contributed by many donors. This pooling of charitable funds not only enables support of a wide range of deserving community activities, higher investment returns and low-cost, efficient administration, but also offers a way for donors to accomplish charitable objectives which may be difficult to achieve when acting alone.

Community foundations are different from other organizations in that contributed funds are usually invested in perpetuity, enabling donors to make a lasting gift, one which will provide support for charitable activities year after year.

This concept of a community endowment fund, directed by respected volunteers, to which all citizens might contribute at any level, was developed in Cleveland, Ohio in 1914. Today, hundreds of community foundations holding more than $3 billion in assets are at work across North America. The Temiskaming Foundation, was established in 1994.

Why not an Endowment?

The cost and difficulties.

Because of other priorities, many charitable organizations are not able to commit the resources, time and attention required to establish an endowment within their own organization. To operate your own endowment you need to…

• set up a separate corporation, fund or other entity,
• file reports to meet government requirements,
• create a governing body with the ability to attract endowment and invest the funds prudently and productively,
• staff this body, keep minutes and maintain records,
• raise and invest capital, and
• protect against mismanagement through accurate accounting and auditing procedures, and liability insurance.

All of these things require energy and careful attention. Not every organization who starts an endowment can devote the time necessary to spur its growth. Most organizations choose their board members because of their understanding and commitment to the charitable mission of the agency. These members often do not understand how to attract and manage capital assets. This is where The Temiskaming Foundation can help.
